Tools You Should Own By 35
Simple Necessities That Won’t Collect Dust
You don’t need a full blown workshop to start taking care of your home or apartment, and adding the right tools to your arsenal can save you untold dollars in the long run. I know I titled this article Tools You Should Own by 35, but these recommendations are fairly universal, regardless of age. I’m not calling you late.
You need the right gear to handle what life throws at you. This list is for people who want to be capable, prepared, and quietly impressive when it counts. Start with only the essentials, and add slowly, but use often.
This is your starting line. You’ll quickly outgrow this small list but you should start here!
Essential Tools Starter List
🔨Hammer — Not everything is a hammer. But, when you need a hammer, you really need a hammer. Here’s a basic, forged, durable hammer.
🪛Screw Drivers — You’ll start using these sooner than you think, and you’ll want to make sure you have the basics. I don’t recommend any of the “removable tip” versions – they’ll eventually fail and/or you’ll lose the tips. Start with this basic set of three flat and three phillips in different sizes. By the way – not sure how to use screwdrivers? I’ve got you covered in this article!
🔋Cordless Drill + Bit Set — Reliable and versatile. You’ll use it more than you expect. You have options, but keep in mind that sticking with the same brand/line will help you with battery charging convenience as you add more tools. Here’s my recommendation:
- Drill / Driver: This Makita duo is will cover 90% of your needs, and their 18v line up is a great ecosystem. Highly recommend. Here’s my article on why I recommend this duo.
- Driver Bit Set: This set should over most any application to start with, and nearly all drivers will be compatible.
- Drill Bit Set: Same as the bit set, this should cover most needs to start with. Just be careful if you need to drill into metal or masonry you will want specific bits for those materials.
Magnetic Stud Finder — When you use this the first time, you’ll understand why I know you’ll be glad you have it.
Crescent Wrench — Adjustable, sturdy, and versatile enough to be highly useful whether it’s a plumbing fix, or you need to build some furniture.
Mini Shop Vac — Small space friendly, works wonders.
Tape Measure — a must have. Get a durable one. You’ll use it constantly, and take the guesswork out of measurements.
Torpedo Level — hang your pictures level. Level your stove. Level everything! Conveniently sized and useful almost daily.
Mental Tool-Kit
The physical toolbox alone isn’t going to solve everything. Fixing things requires the right mindset. Here’s what makes a real difference:
- Patience – Slow hands make better fixes
- Curiosity – Look. It. Up.
- Consistency – Use your tools. Maintain your space and build new skills. Build confidence.
